Three Eastern Michigan University basketball players have been indicted in a federal point-shaving investigation involving NCAA games and international professional leagues. Former EMU players Da’Sean Nelson and Jalen Terry, along with current guard Carlos Hart, were named in an indictment filed Jan. 14 in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Prosecutors say the three were part of a larger scheme involving 39 college players from 17 programs between 2022 and 2025, with 20 players formally charged. Hart, who transferred to Eastern Michigan for the 2025–26 season, is accused of participating while playing for New Orleans during the 2023–24 season. Eastern Michigan suspended Hart, stating the alleged conduct occurred before his enrollment, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Flagged Games Triggered Betting Alerts

Multiple Eastern Michigan games from the 2024–25 season were flagged for unusual betting activity. Integrity Compliance 360 identified abnormal wagering patterns on a Jan. 14 game against Central Michigan, which was later cited in federal court filings, according to information reported by the Detroit Free Press.

Two additional games were included in the indictment. Prosecutors allege Nelson and Terry under-performed during the first half of a Nov. 21 matchup against Oakland, allowing Oakland to cover the first-half spread before Eastern Michigan won the game. A similar pattern was cited in a Dec. 21 contest against Wright State, where Wright State covered the first-half spread before Eastern Michigan rallied for a win.

No Eastern Michigan games from the 2025–26 season were referenced in the indictment.

Federal Allegations Detail Bribery Scheme

Prosecutors say the scheme began in 2022 with bettors targeting Chinese Professional Basketball League games before expanding to NCAA contests. Intermediaries allegedly connected college players to bettors, offering payments to manipulate first-half results.

Court filings state Terry and Nelson were recruited in early 2024 and received more than $40,000 combined, while bettors placed tens of thousands on affected games. Eastern Michigan told the Detroit Free Press that Nelson and Terry did not cooperate with an NCAA investigation during the 2024–25 season and that internal disciplinary procedures have been initiated for the current player named in the federal case.

Michigan Sports Betting Oversight Remains in Focus

The case comes as Michigan sports betting apps continue operating under monitoring requirements enforced by state regulators. Licensed sportsbooks are required to track betting patterns and report suspicious wagering activity to integrity monitoring firms and regulatory authorities.

Michigan regulators have not announced any enforcement action related to the Eastern Michigan case as of this week.
