The Detroit Lions are officially back on the practice field as training camp gets underway ahead of the 2026 NFL season. After finishing 9-8 and narrowly missing the playoffs last year, Detroit enters camp with high expectations and one of the league's most talented rosters. The next several weeks will determine whether the Lions can turn that potential into a postseason return.

Lions Open Training Camp With Playoff Aspirations

Training camp has officially begun in Allen Park as the Lions prepare for what they hope will be a bounce-back campaign. Last season's 9-8 finish left Detroit just outside the NFC playoff picture despite entering the year with Super Bowl aspirations. Now, head coach Dan Campbell and his staff are looking to reestablish the physical identity that made the Lions one of the conference's top contenders in recent years. As excitement builds around the team, many fans are also keeping an eye on Michigan sports betting markets as the new season approaches.

Detroit's Star Power Gives Fans Plenty of Optimism

The Lions return one of the NFL's most talented cores on both sides of the football. Quarterback Jared Goff is back under center after another productive campaign and will once again lead one of the conference's most explosive offenses. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs has developed into one of the league's elite playmakers. At the same time, newcomer Isiah Pacheco steps in to replace David Montgomery and provide a physical complement in the backfield.

Wide receiver Amon Ra St. Brown, better known as "The Sun God," remains one of the NFL's premier receivers and will continue to be Goff's favorite target. Tight end Sam LaPorta enters his third season looking to rebound after battling injuries last year. The offensive line also received a boost with the addition of Clemson tackle Blake Miller through the draft.

Defensively, All-Pro edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson returns after recording 14.5 sacks last season and remains the focal point of Detroit's pass rush. In the secondary, safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph give the Lions one of the NFL's top safety duos heading into the season.

Lions Enter Season Among Super Bowl Contenders

Oddsmakers still believe Detroit has the talent to compete for a championship. DraftKings currently lists the Lions at +1900 to win Super Bowl LXI, giving them the 12th-best odds in the league entering training camp. Detroit is also listed at +170 to win the NFC North, showing that expectations remain high despite last season's disappointment.

Fans tracking futures markets can also compare odds across several Michigan sports betting apps as sportsbooks continue adjusting prices throughout training camp and the preseason.

NFC North Presents Another Major Challenge

If the Lions want to return to the playoffs, improving within the division will be critical. Detroit finished just 2-4 against NFC North opponents last season. The Packers and Vikings both swept the Lions, while Detroit's only wins came against the Bears, including a Week 18 victory after Chicago had already secured the NFC's No. 2 seed and rested with little left to play for.

The road will not get any easier this year. The defending division champion Chicago Bears return with quarterback Caleb Williams leading the offense. The Green Bay Packers remain dangerous behind Jordan Love, while the Minnesota Vikings feature All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson alongside new quarterback Kyler Murray. Navigating one of the NFL's toughest divisions will be one of Detroit's biggest tests as training camp officially begins.
