The Detroit Lions fell 41-31 to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football in a game that lived up to the hype for bettors watching the total. The over cashed easily for anyone using Michigan sports betting apps, and the game stayed entertaining from start to finish. Those backing the Lions against the spread came up just short, losing by 4.5 points on a 5.5-point line.
A Brutal Start Dooms Detroit
The Lions dug themselves an enormous hole early, falling behind 14-0 after the first quarter and 21-0 midway through the second as the offense completely stalled. Jared Goff finally got Detroit on the board with a touchdown pass to Jahmyr Gibbs, but Buffalo answered right back to push the lead to 27-7. The Lions did manage a field goal before halftime to avoid a total blowout heading into the break.
Detroit came out with more life in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 27-17 on a touchdown pass from Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown. But the Bills answered every push, extending their lead to 34-17 in the fourth quarter. The Lions kept swinging, adding another score on a touchdown pass to Sam LaPorta, but Buffalo tacked on one more touchdown to seal the win.
The Numbers Behind the Loss
Goff put together a solid statistical night, finishing 26 for 38 for 327 yards and four touchdowns, though much of that production came after Detroit was already down multiple scores. Gibbs struggled to find room on the ground, carrying the ball 16 times for just 52 yards, a modest 3.3 yards per carry. He was more productive through the air, catching six of eight targets for 61 yards and a score.
St. Brown got off to a slow start but turned in another strong overall performance, hauling in nine catches on 13 targets for 142 yards and two touchdowns. LaPorta was efficient as well, catching six of seven targets for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Detroit's defense had no answer for Buffalo all night. Josh Allen carved them up through the air, going 20 of 31 for 248 yards and three touchdowns, while also punishing them on the ground with 14 carries for 69 yards and two more scores. James Cook III added to the misery, rushing 21 times for 135 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Dalton Kincaid also gave the Lions trouble, catching seven passes for 95 yards.
Looking Ahead to Week 3
Detroit will look to regroup quickly in Week 3 against the New York Jets at Ford Field. Anyone using Michigan sports betting apps will want to watch the line, as the Lions currently sit as 7.5-point favorites heading into that home showdown.
