J.J. McCarthy NFL Draft Projection: Where Will The Michigan QB Land?

Few college quarterbacks have built their NFL draft stock over the course of the fall like Michigan junior signal caller J.J. McCarthy has in 2023, with the Illinois native guiding the Wolverines back to the CFP with his deft passing and game management skills.

McCarthy’s efforts in Ann Arbor netted him the 2023 Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year award, given to the Big Ten’s best QB each year, while also landing him on the 2023 first team All-Big Ten list.

Now, McCarthy and the Wolverines are set to square off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Rose Bowl for the 2023 CFP semifinals on New Year’s Day, in a game in which oddsmakers from ESPN BET Michigan list UM as a 1.5-point favorite.

Ahead of that Jan. 1 showdown, BetMichigan.com broke down some hypothetical odds on which NFL team could wind up drafting McCarthy, whether it be in 2024 or 2025.

Where Will McCarthy Play In NFL?

The leaders on our hypothetical draft board, which you won't find on Michigan betting apps, to land McCarthy’s services are all QB-needy NFL franchises, such as the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons, who have decisions to make in 2024 at the position.

Both teams come in at +500 to land McCarthy in the draft, ranking ahead of the New York Giants (+700), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+800), Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks (+1200 each).

According to NFL Draft Buzz, McCarthy is projected to go in the middle of the 2nd round in this year’s draft (should he declare), with the site ranking the Michigan QB as the eighth-best prospect at the position among those that are likely to enter the 2024 NFL Draft.

One way or another, an NFL franchise will have a shot at one of the winningest quarterbacks in Michigan football history, as McCarthy heads off to the pros with a 35-3 record in Ann Arbor, leading the  Wolverines to three straight Big Game victories over Ohio State with a shot at capturing the program’s first title since 1997.
